Start with accessible pages and accurate answers to customer questions. A glossary, schema, or an AI tool cannot guarantee rankings or citations. Measure actual visits and enquiries alongside any sampled AI visibility.

What should a business implement?

  1. Make the site discoverable. Serve important text in HTML, fix broken links, assign each page its own canonical URL, and include useful public pages in the sitemap.
  2. Answer the actual question first. Explain what a service is, who it helps, what is included, and how to start. Follow the short answer with detail and relevant evidence.
  3. Make the business identifiable. Keep your name, contact details, address, and official profiles consistent. Describe services with structured data that matches what visitors can read.
  4. Show evidence responsibly. Add real authorship, dated updates, primary sources, and verified case studies. Correct outdated claims and distinguish experience from promises.
  5. Connect discovery to outcomes. Offer a clear enquiry route. Track successful form submissions separately from phone, email, and WhatsApp link clicks.
  6. Review the results. Monitor indexing and search performance in your own accounts. Repeat the same AI prompt sample over time and document changes before drawing conclusions.

28 essential terms, explained

Some terms describe tools, others describe writing practices or metrics. BCR, AIR, SAT, and SOM are emerging labels with varying definitions; the definitions below describe a consistent reporting method.

Search foundations

SEO
Search Engine OptimizationImprove crawlability, useful content, and page experience so search engines can discover and understand a website.
GSC
Google Search ConsoleGoogle’s tool for monitoring indexing and search performance. A verification tag alone does not confirm account access or successful verification.
SEM
Search Engine MarketingMarketing through search, commonly used to describe paid search campaigns. Keep paid traffic and organic performance separate in reports.
PAA
People Also AskRelated questions displayed in Google Search. Use genuine customer questions to guide helpful content without promising placement in this feature.
SERP
Search Engine Results PageThe page of results returned by a search engine. It can include organic links, ads, questions, local results, and AI features.

Measurement

CRO
Conversion Rate OptimizationImprove the path from a visit to a useful action. Measure completed enquiries separately from clicks on contact links.
CTR
Click Through RateClicks divided by impressions, multiplied by 100. Compare the same query, channel, and date range.
ROI
Return on InvestmentNet return attributable to an investment divided by its cost, multiplied by 100. Leads need revenue and cost data before they can support an ROI claim.
GA
Google AnalyticsWebsite analytics; GA4 is the current generation. Use it to understand visits and actions, with appropriate privacy settings.
BCR
Brand Citation RateFor our reporting: sampled answers containing a linked citation to the brand’s website divided by valid sampled answers, multiplied by 100. This is a defined audit metric, not a universal platform metric.
AIR
Answer Inclusion RateFor our reporting: sampled answers mentioning the brand divided by valid sampled answers, multiplied by 100. A mention is different from a linked citation.
SAT
Source Attribution TrafficFor our reporting: visits with an identifiable referring AI source. Referrers can be missing, and this count does not measure every view or citation of your content.
SOM
Share of ModelAn emerging audit measure: brand mentions divided by mentions of all tracked brands in a fixed answer sample. Publish the prompt set, competitors, platforms, and dates with the result.
CPC
Cost Per ClickAdvertising spend divided by paid clicks. A low CPC alone does not establish lead quality or profitability.
SOV
Share of VoiceYour share of visibility within a defined market, channel, and competitor set. Specify whether it measures impressions, mentions, or another quantity.

AI visibility

AEO
Answer Engine OptimizationOrganize reliable information into direct answers to real customer questions, supported by accessible pages and relevant evidence.
AIO
AI OverviewsAI-generated summaries in Google Search. AIO here means AI Overviews; an appearance or citation is decided by Google, not a website setting.
GEO
Generative Engine OptimizationImprove how clearly public content can be discovered, understood, and referenced in generated answers. It overlaps with sound SEO and editorial practice.
LLMO
Large Language Model OptimizationAn emerging label for improving brand representation in language-model answers. It does not let a site owner control a model’s training or responses.

Structured information

KG
Knowledge GraphA representation of entities and their relationships. Consistent business details help describe an entity, but markup does not guarantee a Google knowledge panel.
SCH
Schema MarkupStructured descriptions of visible content using Schema.org vocabulary. SCH is shorthand in the reference image, not a separate markup standard.

AI technology

MCP
Model Context ProtocolA protocol connecting AI applications with tools and data sources. It is relevant to integrations, not a requirement for a public website to appear in search.
RAG
Retrieval-Augmented GenerationRetrieve relevant information before generating an answer. Useful for a knowledge assistant; retrieval can reduce factual errors but cannot eliminate them.
NLP
Natural Language ProcessingMethods for processing human language. Clear wording and meaningful context help readers; adding NLP keywords is not an optimization technique.
LLM
Large Language ModelA model trained to process and generate language. Generated answers may be inaccurate and may vary between runs.

Trust and content

EEAT
Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, TrustworthinessOften written E-E-A-T. Demonstrate real experience, accurate attribution, supporting evidence, and clear business information. It is not a score that schema can set.
ORM
Online Reputation ManagementMaintain accurate business profiles and respond constructively to real feedback. Use genuine reviews with permission; never invent ratings or endorsements.
BLUF
Bottom Line Up FrontPut the direct answer first, then explain the details, evidence, and limitations. It is a writing technique rather than a ranking feature.

Measure business outcomes, not just mentions

Use Search Console for available search and indexing reports, GA4 for website behaviour, and your sales records for qualified opportunities and revenue. Account access and a consistent baseline are necessary; a tracking tag does not prove that reporting is configured correctly.

For an AI audit, record each prompt, platform, model where disclosed, locale, date, response, brand mention, and linked citation. Keep the prompt set and competitor list fixed. Treat failed responses as missing observations, and report the sample size with every percentage.

Example only: 12 linked brand citations in 40 valid sampled answers gives a 30% BCR for that sample. It does not mean 30% of all users saw the brand. A zero denominator is unavailable data, not a 0% result.

AI referral traffic is incomplete when platforms omit referrers or users return later through another channel. Clicks on contact links indicate intent; only successful enquiries and subsequent sales establish business value.

Common questions

What is the difference between SEO, AEO, and GEO?

SEO supports search discovery and indexing. AEO makes customer questions easier to answer. GEO focuses on how information may be referenced in generated answers. They share foundations: accessible pages, accurate information, useful content, and clear business identity.

Can you guarantee a citation in ChatGPT or Google AI Overviews?

No. Platforms select their own sources and answers change with the question, location, time, and product. We can improve content and technical accessibility, then measure observed mentions and referrals without promising placement.

Does my website need MCP, RAG, or a special AI schema?

A public marketing website does not need MCP or RAG to be discoverable. MCP connects AI tools to systems, while RAG retrieves information for an AI application. Use standard structured data that matches the page; there is no special schema that guarantees AI visibility.

How should AI search performance be measured?

Combine search impressions and clicks, identifiable AI referral visits, and completed enquiries. For citation audits, use a fixed prompt sample and record the platform, date, locale, linked sources, and brand mentions. Sampled citation rates are not market-wide visibility scores.

Will adding FAQs guarantee a rich result?

No. FAQs help customers find clear answers. Structured data describes visible content, but it does not guarantee a search feature, a citation, or a ranking improvement.

What is needed before starting an AEO audit?

Start with your website, target audience, priority services, common sales questions, and a defined competitor set. Search Console and GA4 access help establish a baseline. Publish case studies and credentials only when their details can be verified.
